As I sit here putting this bulletin together, I find myself struggling to believe that we are expected to have a blanket of snow in a few hours. It’s not from a lack of experience with abrupt weather changes or not knowing we can have really cold weather for several more weeks. It has occurred to me one of the key elements driving my uncertainty is it’s just not what I want. I’m, maybe, a little spoiled by these cool crisp mornings and nicer days.
The Bible is clear we will be supplied with what is needed, even when it comes to the seasons. Genesis 8:22 says, “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease”. The seasons are for our good and in this context, it’s so the earth prospers and our lives are sustained. Jesus himself taught that God would provide as we need (Matt 6). Also, it’s important to learn that I will be fine as long as the basics are provided. 1 Timothy 6:8 reminds us, “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content”.
We are also supplied freely with what we need in our spiritual lives. Romans 3:24 states, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”. Isn’t it so reassuring to know that by following His Word (Psalm 119) with faithful obedience (Heb 11) and a dedication to the cause of Christ (Php 2:20) that every single need we have will be met?
As a final thought of warning, God has met all our needs (James 1:17) and it is not wrong to want things that make life here more enjoyable. God wants to see us be happy and enjoy our lives (Php 4:4) but we must remain on guard because it is Satan who uses our wants or desires to manipulate us (1 John 2:15-17). Let’s simply see the need to be faithful and close to God and want to be found faithful in the end (Matt 25:21,23).
