The Times Are Changing

Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. 2 Thessalonians 2:14-15

No doubt we’ve all heard and most likely said the expression “times are a changin”. All it takes is a simple trip to the grocery store. Not only will one be floored by the high cost of the simplest items, we are also overwhelmed by the actions and attitudes of our fellow man. However, when we examine the Bible, we can see a consistency in the fact that the conduct of society changes when folks get way too comfortable in their ungodly lives. Jeremiah 6:15 states, “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD”. When society gets away from Godly principle, evil becomes the norm to the point that no one even notices.

The fact is, we live in a world where Satan is very influential (2 Cor 4:4). As children of God, we have committed ourselves to be different, to walk in newness of life (Rom 6:4). Personally, I have learned that when I see sin in the community I have to have the resolve to commit to not doing those things I see and hear that vex us so & through determination set a good example (Matt 5:13-16) and hopefully speak some words to convince some lost soul of repentance (1 Tim 4:16). I must live the Word daily (James 1:22) despite what others around me are doing.

While these difficulties are a challenge, they are not stronger than God’s love for us or His providential care (Rom 8:28,31). Many times, we dwell on the negative like the aforementioned high cost of daily living, while never pausing to recall God will supply our every need (Matt 6:25-34). It is very easy to allow circumstances, usually the ones outside of our control, to affect our attitude, which is one of the few things we can really determine for ourselves anyway. It really comes down to determining within ourselves that as an individual, I declare my independence from worldliness and care of this life and will focus myself on the will of God.

Besides, what is right never changes (John 17:17). It is impossible for me to keep up with all that might be wrong, but it is so simple to learn and do what is right (2 Pet 1:3). Love God and follow His Word. His Word never changes.
