Transforming Ourselves From The World

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2

Keeping ourselves free of worldliness lies at the heart of every word of scripture and therefore every time we study or teach the Bible. The passage above really makes it clear. We have only the two choices of Godliness or worldliness. It has always been a struggle for God’s people not to allow the influence of the worldliness around them to affect their commitment to God (Joshua 24:14-15). Romans 12:1-2 also offers a very simple solution to the problem of worldly influence.

We overcome being conformed to the world through mindset. I have the power to determine that no matter what is going on around me I will do what is right in the eyes of God (Daniel 1:8). Everything we do as humans is an action which we are determined to do, same with being faithful spiritually. However, with our faithfulness being a continual action, we see that a level of commitment must persist as well. That’s where the renewing of our mind comes in. We’ve made the determination to be clean. Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me”. Determining to do right is great, and adding commitment to the desire not to be influenced by the world will equal a faithful Christian.

However, determination and commitment without knowledge gets us nowhere (Romans 10:1-4). I see the influence of worldliness every day as do you. While those influences exist, they don’t have to impact us negatively. We disregard things that we know are not to be true, and don’t allow them to influence our lives in any way.

The same process will keep us from conforming to the world and being Godly folks. Make the determination to be right with God, commit ourselves to faithfulness and study our Bibles. We will find ourselves living a life free of worldliness and one that is acceptable to God.
